According to the record, The Whitaker family made it to the spotlight after a photographer named Mark Laita photographed them for his book titled Created Equal in 2004.
Mark Laita would reveal that he faced threats from neighbors while trying to photograph the family and had to explain why he was doing so before the locals gave him permission to do so, this is proof that the Whitakers are well protected in Odd, West Virginia.
In 2020, Mark Latia went to Odd, Virginia, and visited The Whitaker family again and this time he made a video of his visit, which went viral.
Mark Latia titled the video “Inbred Family: The Whitakers,$ and the video has amassed over 19 million views and 250 thousand likes while over 12,000 people disliked the video.
The video showed the Whitakers, a British family with members of an older generation living in a small town in the Appalachian region, and working at their father’s farm.
However, from the look of the video, the Whitakers we’re struggling to make a living in their modest house with several dogs.
The Whitakers as of now comprises three siblings and a cousin named Ray, Lorraine, Timmy, Freddie, and an unnamed sister. However, it is believed that there are a few more individuals in the family who have not been addressed.
As of now, no medical examination has been done on The Whitakers, but there are claims that their health issues arise from inbreeding.

The Whitaker family catered to international recognition because of Mark Laita, who captured them for his book Created Equally (2004). And yes, he did face threats from neighbors who had shotguns.

There is no way I would be able to confirm that the Whitaker parents were related, but given that this does happen in this part of the country and the Whitakers are the most extreme case I’ve seen so far, I would bet that inbreeding was at least partly responsible for the mental and physical abnormalities seen in Lorraine, Freddie, Ray, and Timmy.”
Many reports reveal that inbred offspring suffer from reduced cognitive disabilities, lung function disorders, and heart diseases, and are prone to other diseases. Inbred children are at a higher risk of recessive genetic disorders.
